Help Me Reader is a phonics training tool to help both emerging and experienced readers practice phonetic skills. Unlike products that are currently available, it doesn't "gamify" the learning experience, nor is it meant as a distraction tool to entertain a child. Instead, it offers a collection of engaging and brief stories at varying levels, from beginner to advanced. As the reader goes through the story, if they struggle with any word, it can be tapped to be sounded out by each letter, letter blend, syllable and finally the sounds are put together to pronounce the entire word. It is how I have personally taught each of our children how to read. Beginner readers can start with simple 3 letter word stories and for advanced readers, reading challenges like the Preamble of the Constitution and excerpts from classic novels, like Little Women, are available. Books are priced at only $1 (and several are free) and we hope to continue to add to the library of available books weekly.
With any parent, one that has to work two jobs to make ends meet, or one that has all day at home with the children, time is at a premium. Teaching a child is a privilege, but much of it can also be monotonous. My time with my child is limited, and I would rather spend it building our relationship instead of in repetitious drills. It is not our intent that Help Me Reader would ever replace reading time with a child, but if a parent could have 15 minutes to throw a ball with their kid instead of listening to them sound out their letter blends, we will consider our product a success.
